Get To Know IroquoisEclipse
The RBM: How long have you been writing?
IroquoisEclipse: I've been writing since I was in 2nd grade...mostly short stories to start, but I tend
to be a bit long winded. lol I started writing poetry when I was 13 but just started taking it more
seriously about 5 yrs ago.
The RBM: Who are some of your favorite authors and what are some of your favorite books?
IroquoisEclipse: Hmmm...this is a hard one. There are so many talented writers out there but 2 that
pop into mind right away are J. California Cooper and Kwame Alexander. Cooper writes the best
short stories that have a lot of southern/country appeal to them. And Alexander is just awesome. Of
course, I like the standards...Nikki Giovanni, Maya Angelou, and Sonia Sanchez.
The RBM: Growing up, who influenced you as a person?
IroquoisEclipse: What was it about them that had such an impact? Hmm...of course the person
who influenced me most was my mom. I watched her struggle to make ends meet. Learned a lot
from the mistakes she made.
The RBM: If you could change one thing about yourself what if anything would it be?
IroquoisEclipse: Oh, this is so easy! I'd stop being such a procrastinator! I have a tendency to put
things off till the last minute because there's always something else that needs to be done. But I
perform pretty well under pressure. Hmm....do I do well under pressure because I procrastinate? Or
do I procrastinate because I know I do well under pressure? lol
The RBM: Your writing talent is infectious, have you seriously considered looking into
getting published?
IroquoisEclipse: Infectious? Wow...never would have used that word to describe what I do. lol I
really haven't looked into being published. I've thought about it, talked about it...but haven't done
anything to accomplish it. (Chalk that up to procrastination...lol) I plan to eventually.
The RBM: As a parent, is there anything about Society that scares you that back when you
were growing up wouldn't have been an issue?
IroquoisEclipse: There are a lot of things that our kids will have to be aware of that we never even
had to think about. From HIV/AIDS to terrorism. Not to mention the undercurrent of racism that
has become so acceptable. Back when I was a kid, you knew who was who...not so today.
The RBM: How often do you write and when you do, what does it do for you mentally?
IroquoisEclipse: I write when I'm moved to write. So it varies. I may write 2 or 3 pieces in one
day...or have a writing marathon for a few months. Then I may go into my writer's drought which
could last days, weeks or even months. Writing is therapy for me. But it's also my way to relate to
the world around me. It can be a way to escape...or live out fantasies. Ahhh...freedom of expression
can be blissful! Writing is the oxygen that fuels the fire within me...and I must fan the flames...or
die.
The RBM: What is your favorite movie?
IroquoisEclipse: Too many to name just one. I like comedies (Blazin Saddles being one of my
faves) and suspense films...and horror too. Oh, who I am I kidding? I like just about every genre of
movies.
The RBM: The CD in your stereo right now is?
IroquoisEclipse: Kem (Kemistry)...Xscape (Traces of My Lipstick) and Maxwell (Now).
The RBM: As a person, what motivates you now?
IroquoisEclipse: My daughter and my desire to provide a better life for her motivates me.
The RBM: Finally, to those Community Members and visitors reading this interview, what
would you like to say to them?
IroquoisEclipse: I'd like to say once you've found a way to express yourself that allows you to be
you freely, whether it be sculpting, writing, singing, dancing, cooking, etc...do it as if your life
depended on it. Never let go of your passion for expression. It adds flavor to everything else.
