The RBM: Personally, what does writing do for you?
KC: Writing preserves my sanity. It provides an outlet where I can release my heightened emotions
(without hurting anyone ) whether it’s extreme anger, happiness or sadness.

The RBM: How long have you been writing?
KC: Since the day I learnt to write? LOL. I would actually say officially/seriously about three years
ago. I used to write short stories in my teen years but I stopped and I have no idea where those
stories are now. But then about three years ago I decided to try my hand at poetry and discovered
that I liked it. This year I decided actually to start back writing short stories... we’ll see how that
goes.

The RBM: What separates your writing from other writers?
KC: Not sure how to answer this question, except to say that every time you read something that I
wrote you are experiencing part of my soul – and that my soul is uniquely mine.

The RBM: Have you ever thought of publishing your work?
KC: Briefly a couple months ago when I showed some friends of mine my poetry for the first time
and they offered to help me sell it. But I realized that for me it would be like selling my soul and it
would cause me to lose my love of writing.

The RBM: What do you like to do in your spare time?
KC: Spare time? Wait … there is such a thing? I sleep whenever I get the chance. I’m actually
trying to squeeze in learning how to salsa and roller skate.

The RBM: What is your favorite writing genre? Why?
KC: Poetry and Flash Fiction (Short short stories). These forms encourages writers to pack a lot of
emotion is just a few words.

The RBM: Who was the person/people you looked up to growing up?
KC: My mother – she is a genuine Super Mom. Full-time Career Woman/mother/wife/church first
lady/household accountant. You name it, she did it. I still can’t figure out how she does it.

The RBM: What do you like best about your writing? In what ways do you believe you can
improve (if you feel you can)?
KC: I like that my writing is one hundred percent me - whatever I am feeling, whatever I am
thinking, my values, etc. I bring it out in my writing. Someone once said that my poetry book reads
like a journal, it chronicles my life’s ups and downs.

As a writer I believe that everyone can always improve, and I would like to become truly diverse – I
want to be able to write great poetry or stories about any subject in the world, in any style that I
want to. For instance, one of my greatest problems is that I can’t write love poems. I’ve tried, but
something always seems to be lacking, so I want to get to the stage where it doesn’t matter the
subject, the poem will always be great.

The RBM: How often do you write?
KC: I write everyday…on the train, in class (instead of taking notes sometimes, I know that is sooo
wrong), at church, sometimes even walking down the street I have to stop and jot down my ideas.

The RBM: Who are your favorite authors?
KC: My favorite authors are C.S. Lewis, Janine M. Benyus (Biomimicry), Nikki Giovanni, Jane
Jacobs (The Death and Life of Great American Cities)

The RBM: Finally, to the Community Members and visitors reading this interview, what
would you like to say?
KC: Though most of you probably already do this, I would like to encourage everyone to always
write for him or herself. Even if writing is your job, ensure that when you pick up pen and paper (or
turn on the computer) that it’s what you want to do. For me whenever I am forced to write I lose
the satisfaction and the exercise no longer is pleasurable. Writing should always be a joy – if to no
one else, it should be a joy to you. Just always be true to who you are.
